Second Chances...

Not sure if you remember, but a couple of months ago in an "In & Out" post, I was complaining about a product.
Here we are, two months later, raving about that very product!

Has that ever happened to you before? You buy something, have high expectations, you start using it and after not seeing results after a few weeks you just give up and move on to the next best thing? I do it all the time, and perhaps I should not, because this product has definitely proven me wrong.

The product I'm talking about is La Roche Posay "Effaclar Duo" Acne Treatment

Now, like I mentioned before, when I first bought this thing, I was putting it on my acne spots and groaned with frustration when days later, nothing changed. It wasn't giving me the fast drying results that I was getting with my sulfur-based Mario Badescu products. I didn't want to waste the tube so I continued using it, applying it hopelessly on the areas where I am prone to acne (my lower cheeks and chin).

Slowly but surely, after about a month and a half I noticed that my cystic acne has completely gone away. Where I used to have 4 or 5 bumps hanging around at a time, I would only get a small whitehead or two, which were easy to eliminate.
It took me a while to realize that this was the only new product I had introduced in my routine, and that it was doing all the work!

Now, what is this thing? It is a white serum that goes on clear on the skin. It contains a low dose of salicylic acid and other calming ingredients meant to penetrate the skin and help clear out acne-causing bacteria. It is very gentle and completely paraben-free.
I bought this at Shopper's Drug Mart (a drug store here in Canada), and it cost $28. You get a significant amount of product for the money... I have been using it daily for the past 4 months and I still have more than half a tube to go through.

I haven't had cystic acne in about 2 months now. Now, don't get me wrong, I still get some spots, but it is a major improvement - I went from 3-5 spots a week to 1-3 a month! From painful cystic bumps to small whiteheads that I dry out with either Mario Badescu Drying Lotion or I extract them myself and heal with tea tree oil and some more of this serum.

If you have specific areas on your face that are acne-prone, like I do; areas that tend to congest easier than others, then give this product a try. I apply it on my problem areas in the evening after I tone and moisturize, and sometimes in the morning as well if I feel a spot about to emerge.

So, the moral of the story? If you're using something that seems useless, don't give up right away... give it a chance until you finish the tube (unless you react to it negatively, of course).
You might be pleasantly surprised, like I was.

What products have you been giving second chances lately?

- Sandra

  1. i feel this way about the mac studio finish concealer. for a while it was just not doing it for me but i stuck it out because i didn't want to waste the product. but then i started applying it the way pixiwoo applies it, and voila! it works!

i should definitely try this because i do have some stubborn spots but have been steering clear of acne treatments because i have sensitive skin and they almost always give me dry patches.

  2. Hi Sandra!

If you haven't tried the Eve Lom cleanser, I recommend you do. It's the best face cleanser I have EVER tried. My skin is so difficult, oily yet dry, and this has gotten rid of all my breakouts. I will do a post on it soon (want to use it for a month before i do). So expensive, but sooooo good! She recommends you don't use any other product after washing your face, which has worked for me.

Love your videos by the way!!

  3. That sounds like a great product - I have acne prone bumpy areas on my cheeks - and while the regimen I'm using right now is keeping it under control - it's not getting rid of it :-(

What face wash and other products do you use (toner, moisturiser?)

One product I'm giving a second chance to is Wet n Wild's Lipgloss in Bronzeberry - I got it because it is supposed to be a dupe for Chanel's Blizzard (which I owned)...it is not a dupe - and I hated it on its own...but over a red lipstick - it just transforms the lipstick into an amazingly flattering shade :-)

  4. Hey Sandra, thanks for posting about this... I was wondering about this product!

I love love love La Roche Posay's products. My favorite two being the Physiological cleansing gel, and the Toleriane Facial Fluid (light moisturizer). These products combined with my Kirkland wipes (Costco) at night have kept me breakout free for almost three months now! This is UNHEARD of for me.

I'm curious to try this product you're raving about now, but then again, why mess with whatever is currently working for me, I guess.

  5. Oh, and forgot to mention, I use a homeopathic/natural product for spot treatment (if a stray whitehead pops up)... it's made by a company called Théra Wise. The product is called Ac+ Natural Acne Ointment.

I bought it about six months ago from Superstore, and tried it twice and thought it was crap. lol. Then I decided to give it another try, and this time put a little on, waited for it to dry, then put on another layer and let that dry, and my zit was gone in the morning! I thought it was a coincidence at first, but then I tried it again, and also tried it on my hubby, and he was surprised at how quickly his healed (he's a slower healer than me).

I like it because it's cheap, it's lasted me a long time, and it's natural so it doesn't have anything harsh like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide in it.

  7. Love these posts! It sounds like we have very, very similar skin. I get cystic acne on my chin ALL the time, mainly around that time of the month. They are so stubborn, so hard to get rid of. I will definitely try this and see what happens!

  8. This looks good i see they have just started selling this in my local boots.
My 2nd chance product is MAC face & body foundation. I hated it at first but love it now.I found it really thin and hard to apply at first but i use a flat top ELF brush to apply it now and its gorgeous. I'm glad i kept trying x

  9. I felt the same about the MAC MSF in cheeky bronze. I bought it online and when I got it I tried it and I really didn't like it...at all. I left it at the back of my drawer for like a year and I recently rediscovered it. I apply it with a really soft buffing brush and now I love it!! Can't get enough of it....but it's all down to the brush I guess.

  10. I do this sometimes. But I am determined to keep on trying to make things work. Somethings that are still alluding me: Amazing Cosmetics, Amazing Concealor and Illamasqua Obey Lipstick... so hard to work with!

  12. The La Roche Posay cleansers are also excellent - the 5.5 PH one (the name is escaping me) is really great and can be used regardless of your skin type!

  18. OMG! Thank you so much for this post! I was asking all my friends about this product, but no one had an answer for me. You just saved my life! I wanted to buy this product but wasn't sure if it was gonna work or not. Apparently it DOES work, I just need to spend some time with it. I will definitely buy it, and use it untill it's gone, and then tell you if it worked or not. Thanks again!

Also, I'd love it if you checked out my blog :)
