Urban Decay "All Nighter" - the good and the bad

I got so excited when I first tried Urban Decay's "All Nighter" Makeup Setting Spray.
My friend brought it along when we went on a road trip together back in November and after using it a couple of times before going out on the town, I was sold and immediately purchased a bottle of my own when I got home.

This product claims all sorts of wonderful things, quoting the Urban Decay website:

"This groundbreaking formula mists on, ensuring that your makeup won't budge for 16 hours. Really. Weightless but powerful, All-Nighter's temperature control technology keeps your makeup from melting down when it's warm and humid, or dehydrating when its cold and windy."

Wowza! Sounds almost too good to be true! But in all honesty it really delivered when I first started using it. It immediately replaced my MAC Fix+ since it definitely kept my makeup on for longer and sealed in the pigments of whatever blush/bronzer I was using quite well. Mind you, it may have not made me look perfect for 16 hours straight, but I definitely noticed a difference in the longevity of my face makeup. So, of course, I started using it every day.

A few weeks ago this video showed up in my YouTube subscription box. A great review by makeup artist Wayne Goss bringing to my attention the fact that this wonderful setting spray contains SD Alcohol. SD Alcohol is denatured alcohol commonly found in cosmetics in small amounts (it's also labeled as Alcohol Denat. on the back of some products).
While it is considered safe (as in... it won't kill you or poison you or anything), it's not really the best thing to be spraying all over your face every day... it's second on the list of ingredients for Urban Decay All Nighter, meaning it is present in a significant amount.

I noticed my skin was getting rather dry but I just attributed it to the winter weather, not realizing that my oily skin NEVER gets this dry in the winter time. After seeing Wayne's video I stopped using the spray every day and lo and behold... my skin is back to normal.

So... moral of the story: while this product does make makeup last longer, it's really not worth it for me in the grand scheme of things. I'd rather touch up my makeup on my oily skin if it's starting to fade than drying it out with whatever chemicals are in this spray. I will use the product up since occasional use won't affect my skin so negatively, but I will not be repurchasing.

I'm keen on trying the Caudalie Elixir facial spray next!

Thoughts?

  1. i WAS going to try this but considering i already have dry skin, it probably won't be a good idea. however, i'm still considering getting the sample size since i don't see myself needing this spray often.

  5. I have this spray and it really didn't do anything for me. It didn't make my makeup last longer so I hardly ever use it. My skin as well is very oily but it didn't dry me out at all.

  11. Thanks for the review, I was going to get this but as my skin freaks out at anything and goes super dry I might give it a miss - thanks for saving me the purchase! Will look forward to the next spray review :) xxx

  12. I'm glad I didn't buy this! While I liked the idea, I didn't like the price. I feel like I can get something I'd be much more happy with for almost $30. Thanks for mentioning this because I have REALLY dry skin. This would've given my skin a heart attack!

  13. Oh gosh, thanks for this post! I bought this spray (the Deslick version) and my long dormant eczema has resurfaced! I love love love it because it controls my oily face and keeps my makeup pristine (which is super important because I bartend and sometimes I work 12 hr shifts), but now instead of using it every day, I'll cut back to just the days I work!

  14. I bought this spray in the formula for oily skin and I'm not convinced that it does anything. I'm not sure I'll repurchase it again considering the high price point for something I'm unsure it does anything...
