Foundation Review: Makeup Forever HD

I've had this foundation for several months now and I never got around to doing a proper review for it, so I though it would be fitting for today's blog post.

The main reason I fail to mention this foundation is because it doesn't match my skin tone 90% of the time. I don't know what the heck I was thinking when I walked out Sephora with shade #123 in tow after being "colour matched" by one of the girls there.
The lighting in Sephora is always so messed up, I wouldn't trust half the shades being thrown at me from now on.

Anyways, so long story short - the foundation is extremely yellow on me, and the only way it ever looks remotely acceptable is freshly after a dose of fake tan. In the summer it looked great mixed in with YSL Teint Resist in #5.

So today I had a dose of St. Tropez (I use the mousse) and I was able to slap this on, take some pictures, and can finally write a decent review for you!

PROS:

- good medium coverage, can be built up without looking cakey
- easy to blend
- photographs extremely well
- comes with a pump and is reasonably priced
- wide colour range (if matched properly... haha)
- doesn't transfer as much as others (i.e. Chanel foundations)

CONS:

- doesn't work well as a daytime foundation... makes face seem quite flat and dimensionless when used by itself. Contouring/highlighting always needed.
- mediocre staying power (oils break through in about 3 hours even after powdering)

In conclusion, I do quite like this foundation and I do think it's worth giving a try. It would be rubbish as a daytime foundation in the summer on oily skin, but really - our skins are all so different and have varying needs throughout the year, it's very rare that we ever encounter one foundation that can truly do it all. I find myself needing different things from my foundation in the summer, winter, daytime, nighttime.

I was on the fence about this for a long time and most of my issues with it were colour-related... I almost always had to mix it with other foundations to get a proper match.

After giving it a whirl by itself for a few times I can truly say that I do like this foundation. It's literally the only foundation that has passed every flash photography test. The flash on my DSLR camera hardly ever poses a problem with foundations, regular digital cameras are less forgiving and perhaps the WORST flash photos for making the face look lighter than the body is the flash on my BlackBerry camera. This foundation is literally the only one that looks great even with that dreadful cellphone camera flash - no white face in sight:

I think it's a good one to have around.

What have your experiences been with MUFE HD? Would you purchase/repurchase this?

  1. Thanks for the review! I never tried it and i don't really care tbh. The one i however lust upon is EL double wear and NARS sheer glow :)

  2. I think it's a good, solid foundation but I agree that it has poor staying power. I like extra coverage so my favorite is actually their Mat Velvet+.

  3. I am not sure I'm ever going to try MUFE HD, because I always find something else in Sephora that I think it's worth more....
Anyway, maybe one day I will, thank you for the review!
Could you talk about the St.Tropez mousse? I am very interested in a review, do you also use it one your face?Doesn't it clog pores?
    Thank you thank you!

  4. TOTALLY agree with you for the awful light at Sephora grr I bout Dior skin nude in 040 and every time I put it on it seams that I'm insanely tan in a bad way >> not very nice....from then on I tried to ask samples but some ladies at the counter looking like I'm saying something bad ...ooooo I don't know what passed in their mind when choosing a shade of found!

  6. i wore this to my cousins wedding. photographed amazing!! my only complaint like you said around 5pm i started getting really oily. so powder had to be applied to oily areas only, for a touch up because i have combo skin. otherwise, HG for sure!

  7. I actually really love this foundation! The coverage is perfect for me, and when I put a primer underneath- it lasts much longer!! And I agree, its fabulous with flash photgraphy, which is SO necessary now- you literally never know when someone will whip out a camera!

  9. I've been thinking of trying this out, but I wonder if they have a color light enough to match me. Some lines don't, my skin is porcelain pale! lol Thanks for the review. :) Would you do a review/how to of your self tanner? I am horrible at it and end up streaky or orange, so I just stay away.

  10. Wow! This photograph really showcases your gorgeous skin! This is a fantastic look for you. Another great MUFE is the Mat Velvet. It's really not that matte and mixing it with MAC strobe cream creates a spectacular healthy-looking glow.

  11. Try the shade 118. I think I'm about your shade (NW20-25) and 118 is an amazing match :) 123 is def very yellow on me too.

  12. LOVE this foundation... And your review on it!

I actually bought mine in the Beauty Store at Shoppers before their scuffle with MUFE which resulted in them losing the line. The HD finish really worked miracles in my wedding pics, however, I did have to touch up every couple of hours like you mentioned (especially in the dead of summer).

Never tried it with a self-tanner but it looks great with MAC's pressed powder! :)

  13. I said the same in my review of this, I find it makes skin look one-dimensional. I like it, but ya very yellow and flat.

  14. I really loved this foundation. The texture was nice, it looked great on the skin and in photographs, the color match was perfect (chose it myself since I don't trust Sales Associates as they match me to the wrong color nearly every time lol), and I liked how it could be applied sheerly or built up. The saddest thing is it made me break out :( So I continue on my never-ending quest to find the perfect foundation... literally never-ending haha. x Lauren

  15. I'm going to Sephora this weekend and am planning on getting color matched to try a few foundations...

Ack. It is so irritating that their lighting is crap. Almost a waste of time.

  16. MUFE HD definitely has me torn. There are times when I wear it that I love it. And then some days it just looks dry and flat! You are spot on when you say it needs lots of contouring and shaping!
My NARS sheer glow in Punjab is always a safe bet and through lots of experimentation is without a doubt my HG.
If I am going out at night though I will pick the HD just for picture purposes!

As a side note, what other makeup do you have on here? Love the lipstick!

  17. hello, i am an artist for Sephora, and i gotta say that Makeup Forever HD Foundation is simply our best seller foundation! People just love it and buy one after the other. My store constently has to replenish on new bottles because its just great and sells fast. As for me, i've tried it, and i gotta agree with you, its okay, but it feels too greasy on my skin after a while. I am addicted to Makeup Forever's Mat Velvet foundation, its by far the best one i have ever used, and leaves a liquid/powdery finish (which is why the word 'velvet' is in the name)try it out if you havent yet!

  19. I too bought the Makeup Forever HD & im almost positive it was 123 as well.
The next morning Im super excited to put it on and i was like...WTF? Was i drunk when I bought this...didnt match my skin tone at all. BUT it blends really well & once summer hits and im actually tan i think it will fit perfect.

  20. I just bought this product. But the sales rep i 1st met not good, she didn't recommend a correct shade for me, which make my skin looks darker. My skin tone should use either #118 or #120, but she gave me #123. End up i need to buy other product to compliment with it, ie. MUFE HD primer in purple to brighten up my skin before apply the wrong shade foundation which i don't want to waste it. Besides the wrong shade, i like the texture & coverage for this foundation. Is light weight, and so sheer that i can see my nose bridge clearly. Although high coverage, but it still makes my skin looks translucent. Overall, i like it!
