Disappointment 102

Keeping on the roll of products that just aren't doing it for me, today we've got this bunch:

coincidentally they all match :)

1. MAC Prep & Prime Skin Refined Zone
2. EOS lip balm
3. LUSH Grease Lightning
4. MAC Studio Fix Powder Foundation

I previously mentioned my dissatisfaction with MAC Skin Refine Zone in another post. I tried following some advice from readers, I let it sink in a good 10, 15, 20 minutes prior to applying foundation and the results were still the same. All it did was manage to turn my foundation into gunk. It didn't sit right on top of the product, and even if I used it on clean skin as a skincare treatment it ultimately had zero effect on pore size. It just mattified the hell out of the area it was applied on.

The EOS lip balm is the worst lip balm I have ever tried (maybe tied with the Softlips menthol ones). There are so many better ones out there by Nivea, Carmex, Labello, etc. Even Aquaphor does a better job. I just don't see why these are so popuar given their poor performance. The fact that they look interesting and come in different flavours shouldn't warrant their bad lip balm performance.

LUSH Grease Lightning is a product that works well for others, but does absolutely nothing for me. I've used about half of it and I give up because it literally does nothing but turn weird and flaky on my skin if I leave it on, or do nothing after I rinse it off.

MAC Studio Fix Powder Foundation used to be an old favourite of mine - until I discovered better powder foundations that put this to shame (Giorgio Armani, Chanel, even Bare Minerals Matte kicks its ass). I bought it earlier this year for nostalgic reasons, I guess... and I have maybe used it 5 times. I end up wanting to wash my face about 4 hours in since it starts looking cakey and oxidizes on me during the day. It's also insanely matte when applied so you need some sort of facial spray for it to look natural... off to my "Back 2 Mac" box it goes!

What products haven't been doing it for you lately?

  1. ugh. i so agree with the EOS balm. they get so hyped up but i really hate them. they dried out my lips more than moisturized them.

  2. I could not agree more as far as the EOS Lip Balm is concerned. It does absolutely nothing for my lips.

  3. Im having the same issues with the studio fix powder foundation, the only good thing about it is that it looks flawless in pictures. I mostly wear it on my lazy days!

  4. I've been debating trying that mac prep + prime, i think i'll pass, between your review and the reviews on makeup alley, i don't want to spend so much money on something that hasn't worked for others.

i love the eos balm, personally, but not that green version! I actually hated it too. but the pinkish one, called summerfruit, i really like.

  5. Lucky me!!!! Yesterday I was about to buy the MAC Studio Fix Powder Foundation, because I had seen it in one of your videos (or maybe in the blog....) and I thought it was great. I didn't buy it finally because I didn't like the way the girl at the counter treated me...lol! Which one would you recommend me?? We have very similar skin type. Thank you! Greetings from Spain!

  6. By the way, there is a product that I bought (and I thought was wonderful) and hate: YSL Matt Touch Foundation. It simply does not work for me.

  7. I agree with you on the EOS lip balm. I actually returned mine because I found it not moisturizing at all!

  8. i actually really like the eos lipbalms; for me, they're almost as good as the nivea milk & honey, which i LOVE!

as for grease lightning, i actually returned it. it was kind of useless. =/

  9. I find the disappointment posts more useful than any review. Much more to the point and it shows that not everything is as good as most people or hypes say.

  11. I thought I was the only one hating on this lip balm! It does nothing for me. Aquaphor is 10 million times better.

  12. I am not a fan of any of those products myself either. Except for the lush one because I haven't tried it. Glad I am not the only one that feels that way :)

  13. I read an article the other day about the top 7 beauty products woman buy that they don't really need....One being face primer. They said a good moisturizer that suits your skin type (i.e. oily, combination...etc) should work just the same. I've been trying it out the past few days. And sure enough, my Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua stays in place all day with no primer! Give it a try if you haven't already!

  14. @mw yes for lazy days it's definitely handy since it takes zero effort to apply!

  15. @carmen If you want a matte powder foundation that's really going to last, bare minerals matte is great.
i'm also really loving chanel mat lumiere powder foundation - works well as a setting powder and also as a foundation (if used with a kabuki)... beautiful luminous finish!

  16. @whosoloves I like Effaclar K by La Roche Posay.. it's not a primer just what I use instead of a moisturizer on most mornings. I have never used a "primer" that worked... starting to think that they're useless

  17. Mac powders do the same for me.

  18. Aww such a shame about Grease Lightening, I absolutely love it :)

I really like this series, I always considered the Studio Fix powder but I'm now warned ;)

  19. Glad I did not waste my money on the EOS lip balm. Although I rarely use my Studio fix and it always ends up looking cakey, I've had them for so many years, I think of it as a staple.

  20. Grease Lightening did absolutely nothing for me either, other than give me flaky skin too. So annoying because it's a lovely natural way to treat spots.

  21. I've always wanted to try an EOS balm - I guess now maybe I shouldn't. Thanks for sharing!

  22. I wanted to love the Chantecaille Just Skin tinted moisturizer because I thought the formula was sheer but good. But I could not find the right color for me after exchanging and trying two colors. It was expensive too.

  23. Feel exactly the same about the EOS lipbalm, I have exactly the same flavour. Yes, it is quite cute but it doesn't help much.
But I do love Studio Fix as it is so convenient when in hurry and beautifully mattifies my oily t-zone.
I really like this series of post, hope you do more of them x

  24. I don't know if you still have your Grease Lightning... but I found it worked really well for my skin if I mixed in a pump or two with my Cetaphil cleanser, just to get the added bonus of the tea tree oil while I'm washing my face...

  25. I have to agree with the EOS lip balm.... I tried to use it under very humid weather and still, it is not moisturizing enough!!!!!! There's absolutely no way I can get away from it in Canada, where it is dry and cold all-year-round!!!! ><

  26. have you ever tried Lush Dark Angels facial cleanser? i love it!!

  27. I have that same exact flavor of the EOS lipbalm and it works amazing for me! I don't know why it doesn't work for you. I took it with me to the desert for camping and it kept my lips moisturized for the whole weekend. Although I think it doesn't last on the lip as long as the nivea balm, I don't think it's bad at all!

  28. I'm new to your blog. I found it while looking on YouTube for comparisons on the Clarisonic Mia and Olay Pro X. Anyway, I wish I would had read this review before I bought the EOS lip balm. I kept seeing it in magazines and thought the packaging was cute.(get's me every time!)I bought the pink, fruit one. I don't like the smell and it doesn't do much to moisturize my lips. I'm just glad it's wasn't expensive.

  29. I hate the EOS balm also. Everyone else seems to love it but I find it so drying, waxy, and hard.

  30. Ughh i feel the same about the EOS! carmex dries my lips out too unfortunately :( I'm a fan of Nivea & Burt's Bees.
