Laura Mercier Mineral Powder Review

I've been wanting to try this product for ages and now that I have been using it for the past 2 weeks I feel like I have made my verdict. I'm going to try to keep it short and to the point!

The product in question is Laura Mercier Mineral powder.

here it is in all its pretty packaging glory
The colour I bought is Natural Beige - and I knew this from watching other people's videos on YouTube with skin tones similar to mine. The colour is a perfect match for me right now - I have medium skin with neutral undertones, sometimes leaning towards yellow more than pink, but products with truly neutral undertones tend to suit me best and this is exactly that.

Natural Beige

The only other "mineral" foundation I have tried before are MAC's Mineralize Skinfinish Natural powder and Bare Minerals (both the original and matte formula) so I will compare them to those. The packaging is great - I love the fact that the container is larger so you don't have to struggle fitting a larger brush, and it also has a tab you can twist to close the holes so that product doesn't spill out.

It has a luminous, natural finish - less luminous than Bare Minerals Original but not as flat as the matte. It is my favourite thing about this foundation. It just looks effortless and natural.

I am wearing Bobbi Brown creamy concealer on any problem areas, then applied LM mineral foundation with a MAC 182 kabuki brush. The blush I am wearing is MAC Earth to Earth.
The coverage is medium when applied with a kabuki brush, and you can build the coverage up but it tends to get a bit cakey-looking, so I stop at "medium" and just use concealer underneath on any problem areas. When I first apply it (like in the photo above) it looks amazing, however...

I was afraid this would happen since it happened with the original Bare Minerals formula as well - it makes my face itch like crazy! It doesn't happen all the time and it doesn't make me break out in a rash or give me acne... but the feeling is uncomfortable and it happens when my face would start to sweat (therefore in warm, sunny environments). The staying power is also quite low on my oily skin, it lasts about 1 hour before it starts letting oils through.

I have tried it with different primers underneath and while they stopped the itchiness and prolonged wear an extra hour or two - the finish just isn't as nice as opposed to when I apply the powder directly on the skin.

So, I will use this up (hopefully in the fall/winter my face won't sweat and the itchiness won't be as annoying) but unfortunately it was a miss for me.

If you have had itching/reactions to the original Bare Minerals formula, I suggest not trying this since I believe they have the same irritating ingredient in them. Bare Minerals matte works well but lacks the luminous finish that I very much desire.

What has your experience been like with mineral makeup?

  1. I have the same issue with MAC MSF natural: I start to get really itchy once I sweat just a bit. I'm not the biggest fan of mineral or powder foundations in general; I don't have the smoothest skin so it tends to get rather cakey. I like the look of this powder, it's too bad about the itchiness :(

  2. Great review. I use Bare Minerals original foundation and haven't had any irritation. I also like like it can be used to conceal so probably won't try the Laura Mercier one as 'cakey' is never a good look!

  3. I had the same itchy feeling when I used BM and LM mineral foundation. The only mineral foundation that did not break me out and not itch at all was Pur Minerals. I use one color that matches my skin and another one two shades darker as a bronzer/contour. Maybe you should give that a try!

  4. sorry to hear that.. I guess I will skip this one too, as I had awful experience with Bare Minerals. My skin was also ichy and a little red and the wierdest thing was that my skin on my cheeks was...hot :) the feeling I get when a bad cold was coming ... ok, need to find something else..hope the Chanel loose powder is better, thank you Sandra xo

  6. You look so pretty! I dont like using mineral makeup in general, i find all of it too....well too powdery. But my favourite from Laura mercier is the secret concealer, its the best thing ever for under eye circles after pulling an alnighter studying!

  7. wow, that's really too bad that you had a reaction! i wore this when i was having a reaction and it really helped a lot! this is my HG mineral foundation, actually :).

your skin looks UH-MAYZING with it on, though.

  9. Have you tried Lancome Ageless Minérale With White Sapphire Complex or Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup? My sensitive skin did not have problems with these. I am not sure if they contain ingredients that you are allergic to though.

  10. I did have a similar reaction to both Bare Minerals & Laura Mercier. But it kindda stopped with the Laura Mercier one after trying for the second time. I stopped using it for a while after noticing the itch but then when I started using it back again, it just didn't happen..Not sure why ..I do live in a hot & humid area too. But I have to say, I do agree with you on the not the greatest staying power and the oil peaking through relatively quick..I do still love the finish though..

  12. I have the same problem with mineral makeup because of the bismuth Oxychloride. I loved the LM and BM look but the itchies would drive me bananas. The only mineral makeup I use is by Everday Minerals. It doesnt contain Bismuth Oxychloride and I love it in Semi-Matte and Matte. Try it! :)

  14. You should return it! If it isn't performing well, I would think just about anywhere would take it back. I know if you got it at Nordstrom they will. Then you can try something else that is better for your skin.

  15. Sandra, you look so gorgeous in the picture!
I used ot use Bare Minerals for quite awhile and never had a problem, but I did get some samples of Chanel skincare and it totally made my face itchy! So weird how everyone reacts differently to things. Makes me hesistate to try Chanel foundations...
have you ever actually taken something BACK to Sephora? they actually have a great return policy! I bought NARS sheer glow ahile back, and I found it didn't really blend with my skin. I still had the box, but no receipt & they took it back! I just took a credit, cause I knew I'd spend Sephora money! Just an idea.. =)

  16. I use the Mineral Hygienics mineral foundation and absolutely love it! Amazing covarage without looking cakey but still with some glow to it. I have acne and i dont need to use any concealer with this foundation. It also works great with my oily skin.

  17. Only certain shades of the lm mineralowder contain the ingredient that makes some itch. Hav you seen Bobbi browns new mineral foundation? It looks promising!

  18. hey sandra, i have been dying to try this as tanya from pixi2woo has been using it for yrs and said its her go-to foundation when her skin is sensitive, and she also said it actually has ingredients in it that repair and clear the skin. i know exactly what you mean about the itching, same here with bareminerals, altho i never really liked the bareminerals. i still want to try this tho, to use as setting powder for my liquids and alone on days when im just running around. you look lovely with it on your skin!! <333

  19. That's such a shame as it looks gorgeous on your skin in the photo! I was tempted to splurge on this but I'm rethinking now, thanks for this review! xx

  20. i use this powder and what i do to combat the itch and the oiliness is i put primer, concealer, then a light dusting of the laura mercier translucient power ( or any other translucent powder) over top, then i apply the powder foundation, then apply another thin layer of translucent powder. works like a charm and im a hairstylist who has NO time for touch ups and it lasts ALL day....i also live in florida and this helps it last in the humidity and heat:) hope this helps

  21. UGH me too!! and I hate it because I love the finish too. And it is funny though because my skin is not sensitive at all, and yet this in the only product that gives me that feeling. Even the Bare minerals original didn't make me itchy... I wonder why this happens...
Anyhow, the only way I use it now is on top of a foundation but only in winter because it does get oily on me :( It is a shame, because in Canada it's freaking expensive...

  22. You look like Pippa Middleton in this pic!

  23. My favorite is Lily Lolo. I have oily skin and it doesn't shine for at least few hours, doesn't clog my skin and it's at a great price.

  24. I had a terrible reaction to the Bare Minerals. It dried me out (strange since I have combination oily skin) & broke me out (along with itchiness). It has made me scared to try any other mineral makeup, even though this one has tempted me. I learned later that mineral makeup has bismuth oxychloride in it (which derived from arsenic). I'm wondering if that's what irritated me, but regardless it scared me from trying mineral makeup ever again.

  25. After reading this post, I realised you most probably had a reaction to the Talc powder in the LM powder foundation which is also present in the Bare minerals. Ps most of the Laura Mercier foundations/powders have talc. Try maybe NARS, I tried that route cos ive got the same issue and ive been using it for a year and im perfectly happy. No itch

  26. Its not the talc, its the Bismuth oxychloride! The sad thing is that this is exactly the ingredient that gives the nice finish and glow to most mineral foundations that are not matte....
