A Skincare Rut

Urgh.

I hate it when this happens and I'm sure I'm not the only one - everytime we go through some sort of season change (from hot to cold or vice versa) I always become increasingly dissatisfied with my skincare and get the sudden urge for a change. Something, anything, as long as it's different.

I have no complaints about my current routine, really, but I just feel like things could be better. I always seek continuous improvement when it comes to skincare and when the train slows down I feel like I should hop on another route (nice metaphors I make up for these things).

I especially would like some sort of pampering mask that I can use weekly or biweekly - something that smells amazing and just makes my skin perk up.
A new gentle daytime cleanser would be nice, as well as some sort of gentle exfoliating night treatment, a serum, a moisturizer... ah anything will do, I just need a change and I'm sure you get the point.

Some brands I was interested in looking at - Dermalogica (as always, I'm inquisitive yet still have never tried anything by them since they have SO much stuff it's overwhelming), Skinceuticals, Obagi, Eminence Organics, Sisley, Sibu, Chantecaille???

Help! I generally have oily, acne/prone skin but as of late it's normal-combination and looking dull and dehydrated. If I moisturize even a little it gets too greasy yet if I skip the moisturizer it feels uncomfortable.

Are there any particular skin treats that are rocking your world lately? Please don't hesitate to share!

  1. I definitely can relate to you. I have the same skin type and microdermabrasion helps me out. Your skin looks flawless though.

  3. Arbonne's RE9 skincare has completely changed my skin....it's helped with my breakouts and has really amazing anti-aging qualities to it. There are no chemicals and it's vegan certified so it's great for sensitive skin too!

  4. My skin is super-sensitive after using anti-acne antibiotics. Since it's clear now, I don't want to mess it up and can only use certain products (as much as I want to try retinols and glycolic acid - most products break me out again!).

Even switching cleansers breaks me out! But I wanted to add some exfoliating into my routine (in addition to my nightly Clarisonic). So I've started using baking soda twice a week with my face wash - I just mix a teaspoon in - it gently scrubs and leaves my face SO soft! And it's super non-irritating!

  5. I work at a make up/skin care store so I totally understand wanting to change your routine! I recently discovered the brand Clark's Botanicals. I mostly tend to lean towards natural brands. This brand is amazing and the story behind it is too if you wanna check it out. I got the skin clearing cleanser and the intense radiance mask and I'm in love. My skin looks so much better! At night I use First Aid Beauty's Ultra Repair Cream. Amazing!

  6. dermalogica is fantastic, i love their masks and their daily microfoliant but then again i have combination skin (on the drier side for the most part). are you using any serums? i find that serums have made a world of difference in fixing my previously dull and dehydrated skin. i'm currently loving pure + simple's collagen elastin serum (all natural spa here in toronto). anyways, i think the key is using a serum with hyaluronic acid in it. this way you hydrate your skin without adding anymore oil to it. vitamin c products has also been great for brightening the skin.

  7. I hate skincare ruts, they're the worst. I'm lucky, I feel like I'm finally in a REALLY good place with mine. I've been using a lot of body shop products lately and it's been working wonders. I think my biggest discover though is Burt's Bees soap bark and chamomile deep cleansing cream- my skin has gotten SO much better since I started using this.

  8. ciao bella, apparently Skin Resurfacing from Dermalogica is a good cleanser, but i have never tried it.. as for moisturizers i bought Sensibio DS+ by Bioderma, which I find it dries my skin a bit, but if you have oily skin you might try it! x

  9. I would say Esthederm! That's what I am using right now and it works great. And I have crappy sensitized skin (acne prone and so on...)

It is a French brand (same owner as the famous Bioderma). If I were you, I would defo splurge on the Cellular water spray (miracle in a bottle) and the Time technology cream. It is not heavy on the skin and has subtle shimmers to give you The Glow. It can be used around the eys so it doubles for this use.
Two thumbs up for me :)

  10. I just bought the Ki-Creme moisturizer by Kibio and I absolutely love it. You can get it at shoppers drug mart.

I am also suffering in this dry climate change in southern ontario and my skin is similar to yours (in that it is prone to break outs, is usually quite combination, and am starting to suffer from dehydration/dullness)...I was using Sheer Transformation by Ole Henrikson and I have noticed a huge difference since switching. I look so radiant, my pores look smaller, and my skin is super hyrated, but not greasy.

    It also smells amazing!

  11. Hello Sandra, I've been enjoying your blog for a while now. I have oily skin that is sensitive. Like you I am always looking to improve my skincare routine but do a lot of research before any change since I have sensitive skin, mainly fragrance in products. For a while I have been enjoying "Alpha Hydrox" products. The company is extremly affordable and they know what works. During this fall weather I added the AHA enhanced lotion and it's excellent. It gives me a gentle exfoliation and leaves my skin soft. It has 10% glycolic and a PH of 4. I get mine at drugstore.com. The best part is that it doesn't break the bank so you don't need to hesitate in trying it out. I have found almost all their products worth the try. Hope this helps.

  12. You NEED to get on the Alpha-H train. Liquid Gold in particular transformed my skin (same type as yours). I also adore their Triple Action cleanser and their Absolute Eye Complex is great. Basically, everything they do seems to make a really positive difference to my skin. Love them.

  13. I have the same problem with my skin...oily/dehydrated. I have been using some products form dermae which you can find at any health food store or even shoppers drug mart. They have a whole range of products that suit all skin types. Seriously amazing. I have also tried SIBU which is beautiful, but makes my skin hella greasy! No bueno.

  14. If you want something amazing for the skin you should try perricone MD bar soap, and the Avene moisturizer "skin recovery cream" it's a really gentle moisturizer and does not break me out since I've acne problems.
Here is a link to my review on the perricone md soap http://niceandpolished.blogspot.com/2011/07/perricone-md-cleansing-treatment-bar.html
I use now twice a week and it's amazing really! hope it was helpful!

  15. Dermalogica's Gentle Cream Exfoliant is amazing! I have oily, acneprone skin and this mask is great. Good alternative to an actual scrub, you'll wake up to soft, smooth skin. I tried it after Lisa Eldridge said that she loved it.

    :)

  16. you don't like Liz Earle anymore? I was planning to buy it!

  17. @sockhop I do but I ran out of the cleanser. and the moisturizer is too heavy for me right now for daily use. i want to try something new :)

  18. You know I love me some Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser....not sure if it might be a bit drying for twice a day usage but love using it at night. Makes the skin tingle and seems to ensure the oilies are kept at bay :)

  19. I would recommend you the Body Shop Aloe Calming Facial Cleanser.
It's so gentle and moisturizing but at the same time it doesn't makes my skin greasy and I don't break out with this cleanser.

I think that this cleanser would be good for you...I hope so :)

  20. Cna't get Sibu anywhere but still on my list.
I get your point completetly! Last week because of my urge I got new cleanser this time by

Kate Somerville Gentle Daily Wash, so far so good, same skin type as yours. As for the creams I use

Korres pomegranate cream gel moisturizer, smells so good,it's natural and works great, no single clogged pore.

By Dermtologica I like Gentle Exfoliating Cream,it's.. well gentle and there's something different about the skin after you wash it off, radiant maybe?

Alpha-H Balancing cleanser totaly changed my skin into normal, finally. The best spend money ever. It's freaking normal now!

Let us know what you get!

  21. I feel the same way when the seasons change. I have dry, sensitive skin and I dread winter because of it.

  22. I enjoy Bubzbeauty from yt face masks. She has a few catered to different things. The honey, cocoa, and whip cream one I use as an exfoliant one a week works well. Kandee Johnson raves about dermalogica. I love my Olay night time moisturizer.

  23. Hey Sandra, I have oily skin as well and I love Philosophy When Hope Is Not Enough serum. I apply it in the morning instead of a moisturizer and it's amazing. Since it's not as heavy as a moisturizer, it'll keep you less oily underneath your makeup. Give it a try!

  24. Go read my review on Bliss Steep Clean mask.. Whenever it gets cold out I always start to think my skin looks really 'blah', but this stuff is amazing. Promise!

  25. Hi Sandra! I love the Decleor Hydra Floral mask. It is a pretty standard hydrating mask that I use twice a week. Smells lovely also! The clenaser I have been using lately is also from Decleor, the Aroma Cleanse Hydra-Radiance Smoothing & Cleansing Mousse (wow, what a name). It is the same consept as the famous Liz Earle cleanser and comes with Muslin cloths. I love it so far, takes all of my makeup off and smells great! As a lot of people also have suggested, i too am on the AHA train. In particular glycolic acid in the form of Md formulations continious renewal serum. I use it for my breakouts and hyperpigmentation after breakouts. You have to stick with it a long time and it does start with your skin purging all the inpurities out. Long comment, but I love skincare ;)

  26. Avène Thermal Spring Water Soothing Serum and Avène Soothing Moisture Mask are my two favourite products right now! My skin was very irritated due to a product for blemishes, since i've been using the Avéne serum and mask my skin is much smoother and I haven't got any new blemishes xx

  27. You should really try more gel based moisturisers, they are great if your have an oily skin. The best ones I have found are pretty easy to get hold of they are Clinique Moisture Surge (very moisturising but your skin still feels somewhat matt) and Vichy NormaDerm moisturiser (particularly great for controling acne). Both sink into the skin really quickly, completely stop any tight feeling but also don't over laden the skin with grease! Let me know if you try them and what you think x

  28. I have been using skinceuticals products for several years and based on experience can highly recommend them. The retexturing activator serum is amazing! It has glycolic acid that is balanced out by hyaluronic acid. It gives you the chemical exfoliation you need while also hydrating the skin. I find it helps with congestion, breakouts, evening out skin tone and overall texture. They also have a moisturizer called Daily Moisture which I think is fantastic. They are running a promo on the website that combines the moisturizer and the retexturing serum for a lower cost. I've tried eminence products as well and always felt great using them, but didn't see any drastic results or improvement in my skin. Their citrus exfoliating wash is nice though. xo

New follower!! I saw your blog on Aly from seven things beauty's blogroll. I can totally relate to this post, there are so many different products that are great its overwhelming trying to decide on what to get. Then theres the problem of waiting to see if the product actually works with your skin. Ugh! Not easy lol. Good post!!!!

  33. i know exactly what you mean! my skin is combo/sensitive/dehydrated and i have found taking flaxseed capsules have helped with the dehydration. dehydrated skin is lacking in oil and apparently increasing your intake of oily fish, etc helps combat this. you should try having a dermalogica facial as the therapist will map out your face and recommend products according to your needs. i love the daily microfoliant but as your skin is oily you would prob be best suited to the gentle cream exfoliant as it dries and then you wash it off. their multivitamin power recovery masque is excellent for whenever your skin needs a boost as well.

  34. For a light exfoliating night gel I recommend Ole Henrikson Invigorating Night Gel! Love this stuff and a couple other products from the brand! It also comes in a 3 little wonders kit from sephora!

  35. I tried Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant and I loved it. But it stopped working at half the tube, so I am in search for a new one. I am currently using Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel (Full Strength) and so far it does wonders. But I'd still need to get extraction (for clogged pores) by professionals once a month maybe.
i've also tried Sisley masks, and I love their Radiant Glow mask, you literally see the glow.
I am also using SK II line, which is a Japanese high end brand and they have Facial Treatment Essence which does really help with oiliness. My skin is so smooth after I apple it.

  36. I have the exact same issues as you. I have tried EVERYTHING and its so hard to find the product that works. The ONLY moisturiser that I can use that keeps my oil free all day whilst making my skin feel happy is Jan Marini Antioxidant Face Protectand SPF 30, expensive but worth every penny x

  37. Hi!
I know what you mean... awful when that happens. But since I've gone natural with my skincare, I've loved it. Not to preach about cancer or ingredients or anything, but green skincare just plain works (for me at least!). Would definitely recommend trying it out. Especially Kahina Giving Beauty argan oil - loves! With this routine, my skin is clear! AMAZING.
Maybe check out no more dirty looks (website / they've also written a book). It's a beauty blog but focused on naturals.

  40. i am OBSESSED with the Bliss triple oxygen instant energizing mask. It smells delish, foams up in a very pleasant tickling fashion, and provides gentle exfoliating for my sensitive, combination, and break-out prone skin. score!

I also notice that it perks up my overall "tired" skin when I have been up too late studying the night before- adds a bit of glow.

AND helps my foundation go on more smoothly and evenly! yay!

  41. Sandra,

You should try the Clarins Gentle Foaming Clenser with Cottonseed. And also try the Fresh Soy Face Cream <-- it works wondering on my super dry nose!

  42. I recently tried Dermalogica Thermal Clay Cleanser and it's really good. My skin went into this really crazy phase where it got SO oily, and introducing this cleanser into my daily routine really helped balance it back out. One thing though, is that it's terrible at removing any makeup, so I only use it in the mornings. The lady who was helping me also gave me a sample of their thermal exfoliator, and that was great too. Not gentle, but great. At any rate, maybe look into these products :).

I’d prefer to use some with the content on my blog whether you don’t mind. I’ll give you a link on your web blog. I recently came to know about www.avanaaustralia.com, their Natural Skincare products are very effective.
