The Pros and Cons of Cheap Rings

If you follow me on Twitter of Facebook you'll know that I've been lamenting over Maison Martin Margiela rings for a long time. Deterred by their $500+ price tag, I was so excited to see that ASOS had come up with an "inspired" version for just under $14.
Um, hello! Obviously I clicked "buy" and in less than two weeks they showed up in my mailbox (free shipping, which is always an added bonus).

One set comes with 3 adjustable rings.

They come in silver and gold, and I opted for the gold version a la Rosie from Made in Chelsea.

They're bold and edgy yet simple due to the clean lines. I really love the design. On my nails I'm wearing Ski Teal We Drop by OPI.

The con?

After not even 3 times wearing them (and keeping them away from water, mind you), they started tarnishing and turned all gross.

They still look decent and wearable from afar but it's definitely disappointing.

Perhaps another store will come up with a slightly more sturdy "inspired" version.

Have you had any jewelry disappointments lately?

  1. Most jewellery on the high street reacts on my skin - damn sensitive skin lol! I hope a slightly better version comes out as the style is gorg! :) x x

  2. A good trick I've found is painting over both the outside and inside in clear nail varnish!
It stops you getting green fingers too! :)

  3. I love rings in this style! A little disappointing that they chip after a bit though! Love your blog.

  4. I hate when that happens! That's why I've put a ban on all h&m, forever21 and aldo rings. It's just not worth it when you get less than 5 wears out of an item. Might as well splurge and get a life time's wear right?

  5. I find this happens with most ASOS jewellery, send them an email and they refund straight away (sometimes letting you still keep the tarnished jewellery). Its such a shame as I really wanted these rings as well.

  6. That is the unfortunate thing about plated metals - even the slightest wear can make them peel. Your best bet would to be to look for something that is 14k gold filled, rather that shelling out for 14k gold. Its a heavy 14k gold with a brass core, which allows it to be priced more affordably, but still holds up over years and years of wear.
    Hope that helps a abit!

  7. Top tip - I have these and found that if I painted them with clean nail polish it stops the tarnish nicely - works well to stop the dreaded green fingers as well!

  8. I haven't had any jewelry disappointments but, I wanted to let you know I really liked your Jennifer Zeuler "love" bracelet. I didn't want to spend the $ on one piece. I found a similar bracelet on Etsy. The seller even adjusted the length to fit my small wrist=)

  9. The same thing happened to mine, even though I put clear nail polish on them! None of them are gold anymore, one is silver and two are copper looking (but I'm trying to pass it off as rose gold, hmm)! x

  10. I'm so glad you did a post on them cause I was about to order them myself. Hopefully you'll be able to find some rings of better quality without the crazy pricetag. If you do, please share. :)

  11. If you paint them with clear nail polish it will prevent them from tarnishing or turning your fingers green. It doesn't even look like they are painted.

  12. ahh put some clear nail varnish on that fast! I've had the same issues with asos rings
    It would be mine
On the bright side soon you'll have the rose gold version too! haha

  13. I bought a watch at asos and i paid just 15€ but it was originally 45€ and after wearing it a few times the color started to fade away, and i was like uh? thanks i didn't pay full price if not i will be very dissapointed! xx

  14. I'm always left disappointed with Forever 21 pieces. A gold chain will turn silver in a couple of weeks or months if I'm lucky. A ring will trun my finger green, but I guess for the price I paid for them I can hardly complain. Sigh.Such is life :)

  15. I've bought those too, but as soon as I got them I applied clear nail polish on them!

  17. I brough these rings and was also very disappointed! however a coat of clear nail polish solved that problem xx

  18. This would be disappointing. I've always had very good luck with jewelry. I buy most of it from Kohls and Forever 21 and I don't recall ever being disappointed with the jewelry or accessories I've bought from either. I still have a lot from years ago and they are still in very good condition and still very wearable. Although, I have had issues with earrings rusting and that irritates my ears, but that happens with any earrings you buy after a few years or so, especially if they are cheap. I'd rather pay for cheap jewels that I'm going to be able to wear for more than 5 years though you know? It's worked for me.

I'm sorry you had this experience. I'm guessing you wouldn't be able to get your money back, $14 is a lot of money wasted on jewelry you didn't get much use of. I've wanted to shop with ASOS, have you ever bought anything else from them? If so were you happy with your other purchases?

  20. This happened to mine too. It's a shame but like you said hopefully another store will come out with a better quality version. I'm surprised Topshop haven't jumped on the bandwagon!

  23. This always happens to cheap rings of mine too - I'm sure you've heard of the trick of painting clear nail polish onto it but I always forgot to do it before it happens! A few of my rings went from "gold" to "silver" after a few wears x

  24. Maybe this just tells us that buying knock-offs sometimes is not a good idea.
