A couple of weeks ago I was perusing the aisles of my beloved local drugstore when I stumbled across a "3 for 2" type of sale on Rimmel cosmetics. I was feeling rather... experimental... so I walked out with some new goodies that I have been using for the past several days.
1. Kate Moss lipstick in #113
This. Smells. So. Bad.
Why oh why do brands decide to pump nasty smells in perfectly good lipsticks? The texture and colour of this are absolutely beautiful. It's creamy and matte and a slightly lighter version of MAC Shy Girl. I can tone down the nasty smell by using it underneath a nicely scented balmy lip product like a YSL Sheer Candy or Maybelline Baby Lips. I have actually created some of my favourite lip combinations in this way and I'll be sure to show you more in detail soon :)
2. Stay Matte Powder
The Internet has been ablaze with rave reviews of this setting powder. Many of my fellow oily skinned girls have dubbed this the best setting powder they have ever used. Me? Underwhelmed. It's just TOO matte. It literally sucks the life out of the areas of the face where I place it, and still doesn't miraculously keep the oils at bay all day long. This is a miss. The NARS Light Reflecting Setting Powder is superior, in my opinion (I have the pressed powder version, which for some reason I've only been able to find online on Sephora.com).
3. Wake Me Up Concealer
This has a lovely texture and doesn't crease under the eyes. It's a bit too sheer for me for some days, but works great in conjunction with my Maybelline Age Rewind Brightener if I'm now having a particular bad under-eye day and just need a quick lift. Awesome formula, terrible colour selection (my shade is Fair/Very Light and it's more of a Light/Medium, I'd say.)
How do you feel about Rimmel cosmetics?
What have you tried and is there anything I should be looking at next?

Nice to hear cause I was thinking about trying a couple products because of all the hype! I found the same problem with the Rimmel Kate Moss lipsticks the scent is just not for me.

Had to swap my Rimmel lipstick because of the smell :(
ReplyDeleteI prefer the Dream Matte powder by Maybelline for drugstore pressed powder, it gives a tiny bit of luminosity. I'd like to try the Wake Me Up foundation though, I haven't wanted to try a drugstore foundation in forever!
ReplyDeleteAs an oily-skinned girl I'm a huge fan of the Stay Matte powder, but I completely agree that it can make your face look two-dimensional. I'll definitely be giving the NARS powder a go now!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you on the smell of the Rimmel lipsticks, I only have one and I hardly use it b/c of the smell and don't intend to purchase any in the near future for that reason alone!
ReplyDeleteLove when a 3 for 2 is one! That powder is great and I love rimmel lipsticks, I can't believe you don't like the smell, I think it kind of smells like cherries, I like it! Really keen to try the concealer
ReplyDeleteA little bit Unique
x
I love the Rimmel matte lipsticks but I agree...the smell...ugh! Gross!
ReplyDeleteI actually don't mind the smell of the Kate Moss matte lipsticks, but I have only swatched them in the store! I absolutely LOVE the regular non matte lipsticks, they are such a drugstore gem.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that the scent was the bad! I love Rimmel products, especially since Apocalips came out, I've been using different product from the brand. I really love all of them and they also have very good foundations! :D
ReplyDeleteGreat post!

I hate the smell of the lipsticks too! So unnecessarily overpowering.. I will have to try the concealer, have heard a lot of good things about it. If it doesn't crease, that's enough to win me over!!

xx
i've heard a lot of pros when it comes to Stay Matte Powder
ReplyDeletei really want to give it a try but rimmel is not available here :(
and i hate the fact that shipping is quite expensive than the product
I definitely agree about the smell, it's vile but it's such a lovely shade. I suppose it's cause they're high street, I've known other Rimmel lippys to have the same scent. I do love their powder though!
ReplyDeleteX
yay, so glad you are enjoying the concealer.. Rimmel really does need to step it up on colour selection instead of just 50 shades of beige! good to know about the stay matte powder.. that was going to be my next victim!
ReplyDeleteI love the Rimmel Match Perfect concealer for undereyes. Might give this one a go next though. X
ReplyDeleteI really like the Kate Moss lipstick collection, they are the perfect texture but would be so much better if they had a wider range of colours. Damn you, 3 for 2 :) always catches me out as well! x

I tried the matte powder as well, since I heard so many good reviews and I feel the same about it. It just does not keep my oily zone in control, not impressed. I guess I have to try the NARS then :)

Oh I was looking at the NARS Light Reflecting Powder but didn't think it would work for oilier skin.
ReplyDeleteget new NARS concealer for undereyes :))
ReplyDeleteI was going to get the matt powder from Rimmel now i'm over it .thank you XO
I couldn't even give the rimmel stay matte powder a chance because as soon as I opened it I noticed a strong old lady scent to it....and my face doesn't need any irritating fragrance that could cause breakouts. I'll never understand the point of adding fragrance to face products!
ReplyDeleteI just didn't get on with that shade from Rimmel, instead I now wear it over darker lipsticks for a more toned down look:) x

I love that Rimmel almost always has a '3 for 2'-deal. I haven't seen the concealer in any drug stores near my, but I just saw that it's on sale on asos, so I might pick it up. :-)
ReplyDeleteI thought the kate moss lipsticks smelled like watermelon? To me it was like candy, is that the smell you disliked? or are my scents weird? ha, but I'm alittle weird about rimmel, I wanted to try that powder as well and after your review I dont think I will, I've tried the scandaleyes liner and I really like them, they remind me of the urban decay 24/7 liners though they don't last as long!
ReplyDeleteit smells like cherries and plastic :/
Deletedefinitely not watermelon.. haha I WISH it was watermelon like the YSL lipsticks
Wow, great review! I have a weird thing about my makeup smelling like anything, so I guess I'll avoid the lipstick.
ReplyDeleteJillian - PS, if you have a moment, I'd love to invite you to check out the giveaway we're hosting for a $50.00 giftcard to Shabby Apple!

Rimmel lip liner in 'East End Snob' and a blush called 'Santa Rose' are nice. I'm strongly considering the new Wake Me Up foundation, fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteI don't mind a few products in the Rimmel range, I love its Wake Me Up foundation which applies so beautifully with decent coverage. I didn't find that the Kate Moss lipsticks having a bad scent (it was quite subtle), although I haven't tried the matte formulation of it yet! I don't think that concealer is out in Australia yet so I haven't had a try of it. I've also heard great things about the powder, but I didn't expect it to be very matte!
ReplyDeleteWell, I have this Rimmel lipstick from Kate Moss collection in color 107 Rosetto. Well, the smell is not the best, but it is good quality, budget friendly lipstick. Oh, and I just loooove the color! :)
ReplyDeleteSpeaking about powder – i hate it. It is way too matte for me, even if I have oilier skin in some areas, I just hate the unnatural finish. Right now I'm using bourjois healthy balance unifying powder and I love it so much more! Not to mention, that Rimmel foundation smells like an old lady and bourjois smells very nice!
