Skincare Sunday IV: Eve Lom Morning Time Cleanser

Note to self: I should publish these posts earlier on Sunday but I'm in the middle of exams and procrastination is in my nature so alas, here we are!

Today's subject is a beauty product I'm on the fence about: Eve Lom's Morning Time Cleanser. I purchased it at a Space NK inside Bloomingdale's while I was traveling last summer. It's a slightly changed formula of a cult cleanser, the Eve Lom Cleansing Balm. While I found the traditional cleansing balm too heavy for the oily, acne-prone skin I had at the time of purchase, the sales lady wooed me into purchasing the Morning Time Cleanser. The damage? 60 of my hard-earned Earth dollars. The packaging is very sleek and beautiful. The cap twists to reveal a hole through which the product is squeezed out.

What it promises:
More lightweight in texture than the traditional balm, making it suitable for all skin types. The addition of fruit enzymes designed to aid in gently exfoliating the skin.

This product has a rather thick and balmy texture that becomes more liquid as it melts in your palms.  It has quite a strong medicinal/sweet/herbal scent. You're supposed to warm it up in your hands and massage it onto dry skin. Leave it on for about two minutes then rinse off.

The sales lady claimed it worked awesome with the Clarisonic but I'd have to disagree on that front. I personally find that cleansers that produce some sort of foam are the most Clarisonic-friendly. This cleanser does not foam at all. It just becomes sort of like an oil that washes off with water. It left me confused. It's marketed as a morning time cleanser yet the back of the packaging boasts about its ability to break down waterproof eye makeup... er... ?

While the experience of using this product is rather luxurious and I like the scent and feeling of massaging the product into the skin, I just didn't get enough benefits to warrant a repurchase. It didn't break me out and it did do a good job at removing eye makeup when I used it at night. However the enzymes that claim to exfoliate didn't do anything better than a what cheaper or similarly priced glycolic acid/lactic acid cleanser or mask would do.

Have you tried any Eve Lom products? Am I right to be unimpressed?

  1. Nice review! I just tried a sample of the original balm the other night and I thought it stunk. Literally, like I didn't like the smell. I prefer the Emma Hardie over that one, but this one looks nice too. So you don't use a washcloth with it like the original? And yeah, tha whole morning cleanser to wash off eye makeup thing perplexes me too.

    1. haha, I know right? at least just call it something else. I have used it with and without a cloth... but it's meant to be able to be used with no cloth. it just turns into a milky liquid texture and washes off with water as you would with a cleansing oil.

  2. Ive seen so much hype on beauty blogs about Eve Lom products but everyone who I see who purchases it themselves isn't particularly blown away by them. Clearly their PR is doing a good job but it's a shame because all the hype can lead you to buy products and then they don't match up to expectations. I haven't tried it myself as I can't purchase EveLom out here but reading reviews by people, as I said, who've actually paid for EL products, I don't think I'm missing too much!

  3. I've never used this product - I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't heard of the brand, but I'm sure that's because it's not available in my country - but I love the texture and the consistency! It seems like a decent skin care product :)

    Great post!

  4. I have this cleanser and I also have oily acne prone skin. The Clarisonic destroyed my skin and I have just recently gotten it back into good condition. I use the ELMTC at night about twice a week in rotation with the REN no.1 cleansing balm which I love. I find I see the best results when used with a muslin cloth (also from Eve Lom - although they are stupidly expensive). I would say "morning time" for those with dry skin, otherwise I find that my makeup breaks down faster if I use this cleanser in the morning. Hope this helps!

    1. that's a good system you have there! i haven't found it to impact my makeup and I almost always use it in the morning... maybe because I tend to use a toner after. but either way, it's a nice product just don't think that it's worth the $60 repurchase once I use it up. xx

  5. I have heard so many good things about this so it's really good to read a not so good review to see that the product doesn't work for everyone! xx

    1. definitely. It's not a bad product by any means but for $60 I expected a bit more :)

  6. I haven't tried this cleanser, but i was intrigued to try it..now i think i won't. like you said the price point is a little high for a cleanser that really doesn't do anything. I tried the Ren no. 1 cleansing balm and it stung my eyes like crazy!!

  7. Great post! I was curious about this product but not so much anymore, thanks for the review. Is there any day cream that you like and recommend? I've just run out and I've no idea what to get next. Good luck with your exams! xx

  8. I've never actually even heard of the brand, but it doesn't sound too fantastic and doesn't make me want to try that! I totally agree, I hate when companies advertise morning cleansers and then talk about their ability to remove makeup, all gets rather confusing!

  9. Oh, thanks for this review. I've read so many good reviews on this product that I really wanted to give it a go! Right now I guess I'll think it over! And won't purchase it without a sample first!

  10. Earth dollars lolz. I keep asking myself if I want to try out theses cleansing balms since they seem really popular lately? But I just haven't gotten into it. I usually prefer cleansers that foam up at night since it feels like it is REALLY cleaning and in the morning I use the non foaming kinds so I don't know where I'd place a balm cleanser. Morning, night? Hmmm

  11. I was going to head up to Murale to get myself a tube of this stuff, because I heard they carry Eve Lom products... but after reading several reviews I don't think the trip would be worth it... Most agree it's nice, but not special enough to justify the price :)

  16. This is an interesting review! I would've been more interested in this product had I not read this beforehand. I actually just coughed out the dough for the Cleansing Balm because Space NK are having a nice little sale online right now. But thank you for the review! I think we have similar skin types as well. xx

  19. I'm curious about the tube. it has a good packaging. I have an oily skin type and I'm sure this can be good for oily skin. I think this can be a good partner for my LifeCell Skincare moisturizer.

  25. Thanks for sharing your thought and it’s really helpful. Selecting a cleanser with a balanced PH will help maintain skin's natural balance and for me the best facial cleanser is Sakare’s cleansing products.
