My Skincare Saviour Trifecta

Over the last few weeks, I have been suffering from the worst breakouts I've experienced in the last 4 years or so. I'm talking cystic acne in the chin area in clusters (let's call them "volcanoes of doom") along with regular pimples around my mouth and cheeks. It was bad.
I can only speculate as for the reason why (hormones/stress) but the bottom line is: my skin was a hot mess and so was I as a result of it. Nothing that I was using from my previous routine that had worked so well for me in the past year was working. I became more stressed out about it which in turn resulted into more breakouts.

So this past week I ran (not walked) to Shoppers Drug Mart and went straight to the french pharmacy skincare section and looked at two brands that I always recommend to friends when they ask me for skincare advice: La Roche Posay and Avène. Why not follow my own advice in a time of crisis, right? Boy, am I glad that I did! Here is what I picked up:

La Roche Posay Toleriane Foaming Cleanser

Why:

I wanted to step away from the harsh acid-based gel cleansers I had been using since summer but still effectively cleanse my skin. This works into a rich lather and leaves my skin clean and comfortable, ready for moisturizer. It is SLS free, fragrance free and paraben free.

I cannot recommend the Toleriane range by LRP enough if your skin is reeling from some sort of reaction and is in need of gentle care.

Avene Clenance K Cream-Gel

Why:

I needed a light moisturizer and an exfoliating agent to start working away at the dead skin and to help heal my blemishes. Clenance K combines both alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic and lactic) and beta hydroxy acids (salicylic acid) to facilitate the regeneration of the skin and to prevent new blemishes from forming. This has a light tingling sensation because of its acid content and it quickly absorbs into the skin and leaves it feeling comfortable and hydrated.

Now, keep in mind that my skin is still oily/combination, so if you have a drier/normal skin type, you might need a more intensive moisturizer in addition to a treatment like this.

La Roche Posay Rosalic AR Intense

Why:

Due to my skin being so irritated by these breakouts and the extremely cold weather, I was experiencing localized redness on my face like I had never seen it before. I bought the Rosalic AR Intense to apply to the regions of redness that were so persistent on my chin and around my nose.

It's a localized treatment geared towards people fighting rosacea, so it contains ingredients that constrict the blood vessels and in turn reduce the redness. The texture is very light and I let it settle in before I start applying my makeup for the day!

Result: Within three days my breakouts stopped expanding, the cysts have retreated and my skin is healing nicely. I will need a couple of peels (currently giving the Ole Henriksen Lemon Strip Flash Peel a go) to get rid of the scarring left behind by this disaster but I could not wait any longer to share this experience with you.

What do you turn to in times of skin crisis?

  1. Thanks for sharing your favorites, Sandra! I think I tried Avene Cleanance a very long time ago and wasn't a huge fan but it might have changed since then. I've just started using a La Roche Posay gentle toner and a Bioderma hydrating serum and I'm liking both products more than I expected - can't beat the solid effectiveness of French skincare brands.

    1. totally agree - the French know what they're doing :)
as for the Avene - there is a Clenance lotion and the Clenance K gel-cream. the lotion seems to be less potent and more moisturizing. either way, I'm just glad that I am doing something that works.
      thanks for the comment! xx

  5. I'm so glad these helped! I'm also in favour of treating breakouts with gentler formulas and both of these brands are great for that! Will have to check out the Cleanance K next time my face is acting up! xo

  6. I've been there just a couple of months ago. I got the Clinique Take the Day off Cleansing Balm and been using it since that every night, massaging my skin for at least 5 minutes (read that on Caroline Hiron's blog). I'm pretty sure this helped with my really bad break outs. I've been also using the Avene Cleanance K every night as my moisturizer/treatment. So far it's working great for me. But I'm still left with a lot of scarring. Hope your new routine helps!!

    1. I also like the clinique balm! glad the clenance k works for you too. as for the scarring - i know it sucks. have you tried more intensive peels? like a 10% glycolic toner or something with glycolic and lactic acid.. those help. I had a couple of professional grade PCA peels done earlier last year and they really helped with scarring. too bad now after my new breakouts i have new scarring! may have to get another heavy duty peel again!! xx

  8. The Ren clarifying clay cleanser is also an amazing product. Since I've been using it my skin hardly breakout anymore, and its not drying at all. And the originals charcoal mask too.
I love la roche posay too, such a great brand! :)

  10. My skin went through the EXACT same thing over winter break :-(

Came out of nowhere - painful under skin bumps in my chin area and break outs on my cheek. Luckily just sticking to my existing products (Clinique Take the Day Off balm - saw that it was mentioned above too! Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture, Tactuo & a Glycolic Acid Toner) has helped my skin through the tough period - and now it's all drying out and disappearing.

But I know just how you feel - to have your skin and scarring clear up - and then deal with another breakout period! I'm so glad your skin has improved - and I'll be reading along to see which peels work for you!

  11. I recently had a flare up as well, with cystic acne all over my chin area. I used paula's choice 2% BHA liquid top with her 8% AHA gel. One week later everything healed. Now I am left with many annoying brown spots. urggg hate those!

  13. Hello.
I don't suffer from acne but I have Psoriasis and I always use La Roche-Posay products. In my opinion it's definitely the best brand and the one that respects the most people who have skin problems.
I also use La Roche Posay Toleriane Foaming Cleanser and it's really awesome!

  14. It is so rewarding when you follow your own advice and you see the results. I have been experiencing breakouts too, and turned to LRP Effaclar A.I and found it really did the job to reduce the breakouts. Some great products mentioned here.

  16. i went through this exact same thing last summer/fall. i would highly recommend going to see your dermatologist...he put me on a 3 month course of antibiotics and i started taking Yasmin birth control and my skin was totally clear within a month. also, as much as a i love LRP and french brands nothing beats pharmaceutical grade topicals. good luck!
